The grim reaper who loves Halloween

This week's Thursday Art Date With Rain prompt is Halloween. I've created three pieces for this prompt. The first one is here and the second is here. Here's the last one:

The grim reaper who loves Halloween

closeups
He's a grim reaper who is also a lover of all things Halloween. Each year, he would go and pick out a pumpkin and carve a happy face into it and then parade around the neighborhood along with a few night creatures. Sometimes, he would do some trick-or-treating if he have time between his other duties. (Click on the images for a larger view).

Five Songs : Music for a melancholy day

I thought I shares some of the music I have been listening to. So I listen to a lot of melancholic music but they aren't sad to me. I hope one or two of you like some of these music.

01/ Why Worry - Molly Parden & Hollow Hum > link

02/ Mozambique - Scars On 45 > link
If you do listen, can you tell me what you think the first 3 words are? I think it's 'Baby, don't but' but I can't be sure.

03/ Wonder - Gin Blossoms > link

04/ As we are - Three Laws > link
(It lists 'Siren Song' but if you press the play (triangle) button, it plays 'As we are')

05/ Out of the blue - Vertical Horizon > link

What music have you been listening to these days?

The witch who loves cats & bunnies

The October 31st Thursday Art Date With Rain prompt is Halloween. I've created three pieces for this prompt. The first one is here. Here's the second:

'The witch who loves cats & bunnies'

closeups
I have named her Ollie. I just heard the name in a movie and I thought it kind of suits her. Her outfit was not originally purple - I was going for indigo but it got changed. Ollie is a witch who loves cats and bunnies, well, rabbits but I like the sound of bunnies better. (Click on the images for the larger views).

April Gale 22

April Gale 22

In the bright afternoon light, April sits near the windows and watches the clear blue sky. She is able to walk a few steps without feeling she needs a few days of sleep. In the back of her mind, she wonders if she will stay this way for a while.

Toby has been in and out of her room taking and bringing in trays of food. April has glanced at Toby maybe just a few times but each time, she feels a strange lingering doubt. Is he cursed too? And why does she sees two versions of him now and then? Maybe he's waiting to be cured. Certainly Aunt Josephine, Grandfather nor even Mrs. Summers notice it or perhaps they do notice but decides to ignore it. She should ask Grandfather or maybe Mrs. Summers. But Toby is not an urgent matter.

Aunt Josephine will be home soon. April is worried of what she will say of Winifred and yet, she is happy for Aunt Josephine's return. She really does miss the old woman more than she thought she would.

She hears a rustling and turns toward her right. The wallpaper quivers and then it is still again. She gets up and supports herself with a hand against the window sill and then against the wall as she makes her way toward the corner.

The tree has grown larger, taller, more robust. The leaves are bright green and some of them are curled inward. The tree looks quite real but still has a bit of paint strokes here and there. She reaches out and presses a hand against the tree. Her hand sinks through as if there is no wall there. Immediately, her hand changes and paint strokes appears on them. She stretches out farther and reaches for a leaf. She rubs the tip with her fingers. It feels real and solid. Then she notices a particular leaf curled inward and tucked in the cradle of a circular branch. Is that the green rose Grandfather has been talking about but then why did it come to her when it should to go to Vincy? She grabs hold of the leaf and plucks it and pulls her hand out of the wall. The leaf is soft in her hand. Looking back, the tree starts to shrink and shrink and soon, it's gone and is replaced by a row of pink blobs.

She takes in the scent of the leaf. It smells like the roses in the East Garden. Looking around, she searches for a place to store it. Slowly, she makes her way toward her writing desk. She places the leaf on the desk and pulls out the top drawer and takes out a wooden box with a rose carving at the top. She lifts the lid up and places it on the desk. She picks up the wooden star necklace hanging from a cord made from a horse's hair. Her father had given it to her. He said her mother had it made especially for her. April has meant to wear it always but she was afraid of losing it so she kept it at home. Now she takes the necklace out and ties it around her neck. She places the leaf in the box and replaces the lid. She settles back into a chair and turns toward the windows. There are more clouds in the sky now.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

"Boo!" Winifred pops out from the closet doors. April is no longer surprised by Winifred's sudden appearances. Winifred has popped out of every single wall in April's room. April would have banished her with magic but she haven't the energy.

"What are you doing? Are those spells? Are you a witch?" Winifred peers over April's shoulder as April turns the pages of a small book. "Um, yes, don't you know?" April is surrounded by books. She is looking for the cure for the wolf curse.

Winifred shrugs. "Why would I know? Can you do spells or something?"

"Not quite yet but I can do anything that I set my mind on." That is, if she doesn't screw it up, April adds silently. She would happily talk about magic with Winifred if she doesn't feel annoyed by Winifred's attitude. "Aren't you a witch? Aren't Tyler descendants witches and wizards and people with magical powers?"

Fiction: The thief's number one rule

This week's Words for Wednesday are two images. For more Words for Wednesday, visit Elephant's Child's blog here.

Fiction: The thief's number one rule

The musicians played and the crowd gathered around them. In the applauses, laughter and music, the thief wound his way around and took what was not his.

The moon appeared in the sky like an orange orb of dreams. The sound died down. The thief's fingers paused midway toward someone's back pocket. He looked around him. Everyone had stopped moving. The crowd shifted as if they were choreographed into moving as one. In a blink of an eye, they turned into silver, gray and blue hairy creatures. The musicians ran screaming, some still carrying their instruments.

The thief could identify the creatures as wolves, perhaps lions or tigers or leopards. In any case, they were wild cats with fangs. They howled in unison with their heads held high toward the moon. Their furs shivered by the cool night wind.

The thief backed away slowly. The creature appeared oblivious to his presence. Their eyes were still toward the sky. Farther and farther back, the thief moved with the gentlest of footsteps and all the while, he dared not let his eyes veer away from the creatures.

He ran into the woods and down a path that he knew led out to the road. His heart pounded. He could hardly breathe. On and on, he ran not daring to pause nor to turn to see if there was anything behind him.

It took a while before he found himself at his front doorsteps. Once inside the decrepit house, he sat down on the couch with various colorful patches. He had done it himself a while back. Everything he owned in his house were brought back from the junkyard or someone's trash. It was food that he could not stomach from these places. He had to steal money or things to pawn for money to buy food. Now he wondered if perhaps he could indeed stomach food from the trash. Those creatures. He hoped to never see them again.

It was the same musicians and the same place but different people from all over. But he had never encountered these people that turned into those creatures. He stared out the broken panes of the large window - the moon was orange. A deep orange that now covered the whole of it. Was that what made those people turned?

He sighed and took a sip from the soda bottle on the table. It was flat. He had left it sat too long. He closed his eyes and thought to sleep. Then he heard the howling. He ran to the windows. Out there were shadows. They were moving, becoming larger.

He turned around to find a place to hide but there was only the worn out furniture. He looked up at the half ceiling and the stairwell with a hole in the middle. There was no escape. He had led the creatures to his home. He broke his number one rule: never to let anyone found out where he lived. He should have ran toward the junkyard or some place else. He turned back to the windows. The creatures were visible now - silver, gray and blue. He could not mistake their anger.

He turned to the door - the lock would not stop them. He sat back in his couch and took another sip of the soda. He swallowed and then leaned back. He scoffed. There was no use running. They would find him. He should know by now that crime always have their consequences and his punishment was coming.

The door fell to the floor with a loud thud. But he made no move to run. The creatures entered almost too slowly for the thief's liking. But he sat unmoving trying not to listen to his pounding heart.

One of the gray wolf walked around to stand in front. It rise upward on two legs and immediately it turned into a woman with dark skin with gray fur still all over her body. She studied him with golden eyes. He dug into his jacket pocket and pulled out the small pouch with gold coins that he had stolen and threw it at the woman's feet.

The woman's lips tilted slightly to indicate a smile. She spoke in a calm voice, "Dear friend, we will not harm you if you promise to change your ways. As we too were once thieves, we too learned to change our ways."

The thief straightened up and nodded. He would stood up if he thought his legs would keep upright. "I will," he replied and he was certain that he can keep his promise.

"Very well. We will leave you alone but remember, we will be watching." The woman turned back into a gray wolf and walked out followed by her fellow companions.

The thief let out a long breath and closed his eyes. He was safe. And he was going to change. This time, he meant it. He fell asleep. When he woke, his front door was back up and there were no signs the creatures had been there. But the pouch of gold coins sat beside the table with the empty soda bottle.

The girl who sees ghosts

The October 31st Thursday Art Date With Rain prompt is Halloween. I don't celebrate Halloween and I'm not into scary movies and such so I drew these non-scary characters. I thought I share them until Halloween. Here is the first of three:
'The girl who sees ghosts'

closeups
'The girl who sees ghosts' is a girl that simply sees ghosts - white, fluffy, non-scary ghosts. And she has a lot of hair. I suppose the idea started with those scary girls with long black hair and since I don't do scary, she became cute instead. Click on the images for a slightly large view.

Five Things

It's a bad day not a bad life
01/ I saw this in a youtube video: 'It's a bad day not a bad life' and I really like the thinking so I made a sign. I hope to remember this whenever I have a bad day. I've put it up in my society6 shop. You can purchase a print here.

02 I've changed my society6 art shop name to my nom de plume: yk faith. Since I have placed this name (mostly the first part) in all my art pieces, it only makes sense to change to it. I have not changed the url as that requires starting over with a new account and putting up the artwork back up again and several other things that just take a lot of work. It's still the same address but with a different name. Visit the shop here.

03/ If you have a blogroll either on your sidebar or in a separate page link, I read them, that is, I peruse them from time to time. I notice blogrolls are a bit rare these days. I've noticed also no one particularly updates their blogroll like I do. So why don't I place those blogs that I like into my blogroll? Laziness, really. And also, my reading habits (of blogs that is) sometimes changes and I also forget to add them but they are conveniently in blogs I visit often so why add them?

04/ I'm not ready for winter and I never will. Every time the weather becomes cold, I thought it's not too bad and then I went outside and it's what the heck? You would think I've gotten used to the changing weather after so many years but I never did. But I'm all for wearing scarves and hats.

05/ Shows watched in September & October

I Picked Up a Celebrity On The Street
I Picked Up a Celebrity On The Street > link
This is a short 10-episode show. It really is fun watching this and it didn't take much time which totally spoiled me and I now wish all shows are this short. I really like the spunky woman lead played by Kim Ga Eun, she totally makes the show worth watching.

The Good Witch
The Good Witch > link
This is a drama set in reality, no magic here like the title suggested. It's about twins (Sun Hee and Do Hee) in which one of them is good and the other is not and the good twin takes over the not so good twin's life just to help her out. It's a fun show if you try to ignore the politics and that awful cruel lady that makes everyone miserable. I've never thought airline stewards to have such cut-throat competitions or how hard it is to become one. My favorite character would have to be Sun Hee's daughter, Cho Rong. She is so delightful and smart and I really like her relationship with her mother - those two supports each and really delight in each other's company. The romance between Sun Hee and Captain Song is quite fun though I still hate how he gets confused because of the twins which seems almost unfair sometimes because he really is nice guy. The show is 40 episodes long but it's worth watching if you have the time.

Lion Pride
Lion Pride > link
A fun, crime mystery show with an adorable couple, with more focus on the romance but the mystery is entertaining enough. The music is just wonderful. There is an artist called Three Laws with two songs that are played excessively through the show but I like them so I didn't mind. I really like all the characters and I enjoyed watching the two leads and their romance.

What have you been doing lately?

April Gale 21

~ ~  Read previous April Gale here ~ ~

Note: There is a summary of the story far in every 10 part, so if you go to Part 10 or 20, there should be a summary. So there might be a summary in earlier parts but I decided not to remove them.

April Gale 21

Winifred watches as Mrs. Winters gently dabs a handkerchief to her body's forehead. Winifred has always seen Mrs. Winters as the housekeeper that always does her duties without any sort of emotions behind it but now she cannot help but wonder if Mrs. Winters' sternness is just a shield to hide her true feelings.

Winifred sighs. Why does she only finds out that people care for her when she is...What is she? A spirit? A ghost? She is not certain. Mrs. Winters is a ghost and yet, she does not see Winifred standing right beside her. Perhaps she is dreaming all of this but how can she be? She must be a different kind of ghost from Mrs. Winters. After all, she can move through walls and even when she tries to walk using her feet, she floats. She looks out the windows. Even in this state, she could not help but feel the restlessness that follows her wherever she go.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

April wakes up to the afternoon sunlight flooding her room. She sits up and then she realizes someone is in the room with her. She turns to her left. Grandmother Emma hovers there smiling at April.

"Grandmother! Have you been watching me for long?"

"Just an hour or two. Harry was worried and I was worried. But it was foolish of us. You are perfectly fine."

Aprils sits up higher and turns to face Grandmother Emma. "What we were discussing before, about Wini. What do I have to do get her back to her body? Is there a spell I can do or a potion I can make?"

Grandmother laughs and shakes her head. "Nothing. My Dear, you can do nothing. It is Winifred who needs to do something. She needs to want to live. If she has not been eager to go, her spirit would not have left her body. You must convince Winifred being a ghost is not her destiny."

Fiction: Melinda met the devil or so she thought

This week's Words for Wednesday prompts are two phrases: You can't judge a book by its cover;  And/or The squeaky wheel gets the grease and a very short story for you to expand (or not):
For Sale.
Wedding Dress.
Never worn.

I didn't use either phrases since they didn't inspire anything but the 'wedding dress' inspired this story but don't ask what it means. And I actually posted on a Wednesday, well, on my side of the world at least.

For more Words for Wednesday, visit Elephant's Child's blog here.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiction: Melinda met the devil or so she thought

Melinda was sobbing at the downtown mall's second floor ladies restroom when someone knocked on her stall door. She held back her sob and said, "Occupied."

But the knocking came again. She repeated, "Occupied."

But the knocking came yet again. "I said 'Occupied!" she shouted.

Again, the knocking came. She didn't bother putting her shoes back on and just got up and pulled the door opened and shouted, "What do you want?"

The man standing there had his hands in his pants pockets. His pale face was a deep contrast to his long black hair, black suit and worn out crimson boots. He tilted his head slightly and veered his eyes up toward her head of disheveled brown waves and down to her bare feet peeking out from the dark stained hem of her wedding dress. She felt a slight chill. "I want to know when you're ready to leave."

"Leave? To go where? You're in the ladies' restroom, do you know?" She looked around her and was glad to see no urinals. She turned back to the man. His eyes were light gray, almost colorless. She felt uneasy under his gaze.

"To hell. That is your destination."

"What the hel— I mean what do you mean?"

"It's time you go where you are destined, Melinda."

"How did you—" She let out a sigh. "What are you talking about? Are you the devil or something?"

"Or something. Call me Devin." He grinned showing his set of perfectly aligned, gleaming white teeth.

"I'm— I'm not dead," she said but even as the words slipped out of her mouth she was not certain if she was lying or not. She looked for a place to sit and saw the wooden chair by the sink and sat down only to fall to the floor. One of the chair's leg slid out. She peered up at Devin. He held out a hand but she ignored it. "Why— How could I have died?"

He withdrew his hand and slid it back into his pants pocket. "Well, did you noticed that bus that was coming toward you a while ago?"

She shook her head. But the image of the bus headlights came into her mind. But she had dodged the bus. She was safe. She looked up at Devin. He was shaking his head as if he knew what she was thinking. "You weren't safe. Your spirit came out of your body before the bus hit you. Now, if you'll follow me—"

"No! I am not dead." She struggled to push herself up. Devin offered a hand again but she ignored it. She stepped on bits of her dress hem and ripped it as she forcefully stood up. "I am not dead. I haven't even gotten married."

"Well, is that our fault?" He lifted an eyebrow.

She crossed her arms over her chest. "I am not leaving. I refused to go with you."

"Then I have no choice. Goodbye and good luck." He vanished. She blinked and rubbed her eyes. But he was gone. She looked around her — at the faded yellow wallpaper, the gray stalls with various writings, the tiled floor with yellow flowers — how did she ended up here? She remembered before the ceremony started, she felt she could not marry Barry then, nor ever. She walked calmly toward the exit and when people started pulling at her arms, she bolted out of the building. She saw the mall across the street and ran inside. It was bright and cheery. She wondered where to go and then she suddenly had to pee. Within moments she was in the ladies room. Then she was sobbing and remembering how her life was over and then the knocking came.

She could not have died not without her knowing and yet, she could sense something was off. Was she dreaming? She slapped her cheek but felt nothing. If she was dreaming, then why did she not feel normal?

Her vision started to swim. Her head ached. She closed her eyes and then opened them again. The dark sky greeted her. A man's face appeared. He wore a white shirt with a red cross embroidered on the sleeve. "Ma'am, do you know where you are?"

She stared at him. She had no idea where she was. Her head was pounding as if a hammer had struck her. The sky turned into a white ceiling. The sirens and voices were muffled. She could not move. Something was holding her down. But then she spied boots peeking out of the hem of her dress — they were crimson.

Resolutions 2019 — Update

I made these resolutions in January so I thought it's time for an update. I would try for a later update but I know I'll probably won't even do anything from the list except maybe #3 and #4 but those two are always something I meant to do anyway. So these resolutions are nothing to brag about but I just think maybe if I succeeded in doing a little of something, it won't seem like I have been wasting the year away.

01/ Worry about tomorrow's problem tomorrow —  Succeeded — or so I think but how does one not worry at all?

02/ Don't save things thinking I'll use them later
Succeeded slightly — it's kind of hard not to save new things for later especially if it's something expensive or hard to come by

03/ Finish up my drawingsFailed but I'm not unhappy about it — I have this goal for a while and the unfinished pieces keeps piling up so I'll probably never finish all of them anyway but I do try a little

04/ Write/finish those novels Failed — I never seem to succeed with this one even though I tried all the time but it's not terrible, at least I wrote stuff

05/ Be more active on InstagramFailed — but I really just don't care for the format at all

06/ Promote my Society6 ShopKind of succeeded since I did mentioned it here now and then but honestly, if I'm not on social media (like Instagram), I really do not get any publicity at all (and if you're interested in checking out the shop, go here)

07/ Do more of what makes me happy —  Succeeded mostly because I seem to enjoy not doing stuff

Did you make any new year's resolutions? If you did, how did you do?

October Blog Header Redesign Giveaway

Update: This giveaway is cancelled due to low interest but if you've commented here, than consider yourself chosen and send me an email if you want a header redesign. Thank you & have a lovely day.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I may regret this but I thought why not try it for a while and see what happens. I know my style isn't to everyone's taste but I do love designing blog headers. So, every couple of months or less or when I feel like I have too much time on hand, I will open a giveaway for a free header redesign for one lucky blogger.

I said 'redesign' because I will not really design new headers rather I prefer to improve what's there but if there's not much there, I suppose I can come up with something.

Before you go and decide you want to enter into this giveaway, here are some things to know:
1 - For blogs only — no websites, blogs because I just prefer them
2 - For Blogger and Wordpress blogs only — you can still enter in the giveaway even if you do not use these platforms but remember, I cannot help you with installation.
3 - There is no guarantee you'll like what I designed — if that is so, then you don't have to use them.
4 - This giveaway ends October 31, 2019.

I can't think of anything else but if I do, I'll add it to the list.  If interested, leave a comment below. If you have questions, just leave them in the comments though my respond will be a bit late.

Here are some headers that I made for my blogs (all photos and artworks are mine):
And other design samples here and here.

Blog Hopping

Here are some blog hops (or memes, challenges, co-ops or whatever you want to call them) that I thought bloggers would like to participate in. Okay, I may also be interested in these because why not? No blogger should have to think up things to post when there are plenty of ideas out there. I'm all for blog hops because I'm lazy. Also, it's nice to interact with new bloggers and sharing something similar makes it easier. Coincidently most of these takes place either starting Thursday, on Thursday or ends Thursday, weird? Is there something special about Thursday that I do not know?

Here are some stuff I designed (Click on the images for a larger view):

01/ A badge for Carver's blog at Carver's Photographic Journey
This is a badge for Carver's blog. I used her photos because it's for her blog after all and these are some of my favorites photos. I might have enhanced the photo in version 1. My favorite is Version 3 because of the ducks. (Fonts used: Version1 & 2: Salamander Script; Version 3 & 4: Shintia Script Regular)

02/ Expressions by Mail for Ro at In the Know With Ro
This is a logo for a service Ro is doing. I just went with the mail stamp symbol and worked with that. I believe the purple color is Ro favorite color so I used that. Version 3 & 4 are meant to be used with any background (photos or color background) but I really do like the purple for the background. (Fonts used: Adobe Jenson Pro, Adobe Jenson Pro Semibold Italic & Helvetica Bold for capital letters)

03/ A Reader's Quirks for Roberta at Offbeat YA
This is for a graphic for a post series about reading Roberta have going on in her blog. The lady with the curls is a request that I was fully willing to do because I like drawing faces and hair and I just work with that. The eyeglasses in two colors and the two expressions (in Version 1 and the Final) is to express opposite opinions or something like that. And the colors are Roberta's blog's colors. It is always nice not to have to make color decisions because I seems to used awfully large amount of colors. Can you spot the difference between Version 1 and the Final Version? (Fonts used: Version 1 & 3 & Final: American Typewriter; Version 2: Noteworthy Bold)

04/ A badge with an owl and soap for Uglemor - Mother Owl
Uglemor asks for owls and soap and that's what she got. Since there are many types of owls, I just did what I think an owl would look like. There are two version of each design - one with black outline and one without.  When you look compare, you can tell the ones without dark outline is soften which I often like but the ones with dark outlines stands out better in small sizes. The final is blue because Uglemor likes blue better and I'm with her on that as I always lean towards blue. These would look on soap packages if she ever want to use them as that and also as stickers.
